Latta rolls in average night for Felton

With a double-double in Latta High School's last home game of the regular season, Raymond Felton led the Vikings to sole possession of South Carolina's Region 8A title on Friday night as they defeated Hannah Pamplico 92-73. This is Latta's sixth consecutive regional title.

Felton scored 29 points and dished out ten assists in the victory. Those numbers are a remarkable night for any player at any level, but for Felton it was average evening. Quite simply, people have gotten used to Raymond putting those numbers up every time he steps on the court. For the season, Raymond is averaging 29.8 points per game to go along with his 7.8 assists.

Although he started off the evening slowly, as did his teammates, midway through the first quarter Felton hit four three-pointers and made several amazing assists. For the evening he had six steals and eight rebounds.

Coach Smith commented, "It's always good to get the regional title -- it's the culmination of a lot of hard work. It's good to have that talented a player leading your team. And it gives you two home playoff games without going on the road."

Smith has given his team the last couple of Saturdays off in order to guard against the fatigue that comes with a full season of play. The Latta High School coach predicts that they will probably meet either Lamar (SC) or Elloree (SC) in the first game of the postseason, whichever team finishes fourth in South Carolina's Region 5.

Latta High School's remaining regular season schedule includes a game Tuesday night (2/12) at Britton's Neck (SC), followed by another away game on Thursday night (2/14) at Lake View (SC).

The Felton Watch:
Felton's 29 points in last night's victory over Hannah Pamplico brings his career total to 2,631 points. He is now within 64 points of breaking the all-time South Carolina career points record of 2,695, set by Hartsville's (SC) Roderick Blakeney from 1990-1994.

(Note: Latta's last regular season home game was last night against Hannah Pamplico and not 2/14 against Lake View as earlier reported. Should Felton break the South Carolina career scoring record at home, it would be during Latta's first or second playoff game which will be held at Latta High School. My apologies for the schedule error.
