UNC-Virginia: Postgame Notes

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – The Virginia Cavaliers used their exceptional athletic ability and a rowdy home court advantage to run past the North Carolina Tar Heels, 73-63, sending UNC to a school-record 16th loss of the season.

UNC (6-16, 2-10 Atlantic Coast Conference) struggled with its ballhandling, a common occurrence for Matt Doherty's team, and were swarmed not just by UVa's defense but its frenzied home crowd of 7,331 At University Hall.

Here are some notes from Carolina's loss.

*The Heels have lost 11 of 12 games – all in 2002 – and have won just as many games since Dec. 30 as the UNC football team: One.

*UNC added to its school-record of ACC losses in a season with its 10th league loss of the year. Prior to this season Carolina had only lost as many as eight league games once, in the 1963-64 season, Dean Smith's third as head coach.

*Carolina's 16th loss overall sets a single-season school record. Twice before UNC lost as many as 15 games: 1950-51 and 1951-52.

*With the loss UNC's all-time record against Virginia is now 114-64.

*The Tar Heels are now 22-15 against UVa at University Hall. Overall, Carolina is 39-28 against the Wahoos in Charlottesville.

*Carolina has now lost five of the last six games against Virginia.

*UNC fifth-year senior forward Orlando Melendez was slapping hands with some Virginia students prior to the game and even, at the students' request, sent home a thunderous slam in vintage Melendez style. He then turned and joined his teammates in the locker room signaling the "No. 1" sign as he ran off the floor, some 30 minutes before tipoff.

*The Tar Heels are now 1-7 on the road this season.

*With the loss, UNC is now 10 games under .500. Prior to this season, the Tar Heels had never been more than five games under .500 at any time in any season.

*Entering the game, Carolina was averaging 19.4 turnovers per game in ACC play and 16.7 in overall games.

*UNC has used 10 different starting lineups this year. The lineup of Jason Capel, Will Johnson, Kris Lang, Melvin Scott and Adam Boone is 1-3. The lineup of Scott, Jackie Manuel, Capel, Johnson and Lang is 2-4. The lineup of Scott, Manuel, Capel, Johnson and Brian Bersticker is 3-0. The other seven lineups are a combined 0-10.

*UVa's University Hall, which opened up in the 1964-65 season, will close after the 2004-05 season.

*Charlottesville isn't a kind place for struggling fabled programs these days. Penn State's football lost team lost its season finale at Virginia to give legendary coach Joe Paterno his first ever losing season. Tonight, UNC's 16th loss set a school record.

*After a UVa student made four shots in a contest during a timeout, the "MC" of the contest asked him how he felt as he was walking off the floor and the student said, "Lets see Jason Capel shoot like that."

*UVa students were chanting, "Jeff was better…" at Jason Capel when he was at the free throw line.

*Jonathan Holmes was not in uniform as he awaits results blood tests. He has felt soreness in his knees and hands over the last week and had ache and pain flu-like symptoms but hasn't been sick. He isn't permitted to play until the results come back.
