BW: Vernon Macklin Spotlight

HAMPTON, Va.-- Vernon Macklin, 6-9 UNC basketball recruiting target, displayed a level of athleticism at the Boo Williams Tournament that makes him one of the top players in the class of 2006.

He's long, lean, and has that pogo stick bounce. He can score in transition or in the half court. His game is best when it's outside-in, but he has a tendancy to drift out to the perimeter. He followed suit on Friday night spending much of his time away from the basket, but he made the most of his opportunities down low.

He finished with12 points (5-7 FG), five rebounds, five assists and two blocks in round-robin action in a route of fellow 2006 target Brandan Wright's Murfreesboro Stars. Macklin used his strength to create space and score over the smaller Wright on dunks and layups.

His current list of schools consists of North Carolina, Wake Forest, Maryland, and Georgetown, but he does not have any official visits scheduled at this time, nor will he be able to do so until he improves his SAT score. He has taken it once without success but is scheduled to take it again this summer.

"I didn't do that good on it," he said, but he characterizes his grades as "OK."

He describes himself as a player who can run the court well and finish in transition.

According to Macklin, the UNC coaching staff has been to see him work out.

"They have offered me a scholarship," he said. "[It happened] at the camps. My high school coach told me."

However, none of the details of the offer were revealed to him, and Inside Carolina has been unable to confirm an offer at this time.
