New Hampton lost the opening round game of their own New Hampton Invitational on Friday.
Maine Central Institute jumped out to an 11-2 advantage and led by as many as 18 points in the first half.
New Hampton battled back, even taking the lead for a moment midway through the second half, but couldn't sustain their effort. Final score: MCI 76, NH 70.
Rashad McCants, who fouled out in the game's final minutes, had 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and one block. Potential Tar Heel walk-on Wes Miller led the Huskies with 18 points and five assists.
In the consolation game the following day, New Hampton struggled with a Brewster squad they had already beaten handily twice this season.
Brewster hung around the entire contest, preventing New Hampton from opening up the game as they had in previous meetings. It took clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to pull out the win.
McCants had an impressive effort, posting 31 points, six boards, four assists, two steals and two blocks. Miller hit five threes en route to 18 points and six assists.
Brewster center Damion Grant, a Tar Heel commitment, sat the game out with a deep thigh bruise suffered in the opening round.
New Hampton, at 22-3, hosts Bridgton Academy on Wednesday night, before heading to Chapel Hill for a Saturday afternoon matchup with the UNC JV squad at 4 p.m.
