Whitmore should be among the top recruits coming out of Virginia this year with scholarship offers already from UNC, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Penn State, Maryland, West Virginia and Syracuse.
Currently, Whitmore says the Hokies lead.
"Virginia Tech was the school that I grew up liking," he said. "I plan to go to the NIKE camp there next week. I talked to Greg [Boone] some about recruiting and he told me that there will be a lot of phone calls and letters. It will be much later before I will decide anything though."
But the Tar Heels do appear to be in good shape if Whitmore sours on the Hokies.
"I'm going to attend some Carolina football games and I'm sure that they will get one of my official visits," he said. "I could really see myself fitting in there."
Whitmore said that UNC assistant coach Brad Lawing is his primary recruiter (who would also project as his position coach should Whitmore choose the Heels. Don't look for the Virginia defensive end to make a decision anytime soon though as he is looking to making his decision closer to Signing Day.
Whitmore is a former teammate of Boone, the highly recruited athlete that signed with Virginia Tech for 2005.
