Before receiving his official scholarship offer, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound tailback from Rockingham (N.C.) Richmond observed the Tar Heels' Blue-White Spring Game. Although many recruits were in attendance, Whitley was given the VIP treatment throughout the day.
"During the spring game they had me on the sideline," said Whitley. "When I was on the sideline they had me on the big Jumbotron when I was talking to Coach [John] Bunting – which I enjoyed. During the visit I just felt like the number one guy. Coach Powell singled me out from a group of people and had me come to his office."
Whitley denies any favorites, but admits he is fond of North Carolina and can easily picture himself in the offense.
"I like North Carolina," said Whitley. "I feel like whoever commits there they will get a good chance to play. I feel like I will fit in their offense well, and I can make an impact whereever they play me."
Whitely does hope to have established a top five or six by the end of May.
Last weekend, Whitley was the toast of the Shrine Bowl combine held in his hometown. He ran a 4.47-second 40-yard dash, 4.06-second 20-yard shuttle, vertically jumped 33.9 inches, and even rep'd 185 pounds 20 times.
