Burney, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound athlete from Jacksonville (N.C.) Southwest Onslow, said he is firmly committed and will only camp and officially visit North Carolina.
With his recruitment closed, Burney shifts his focus to baseball and helping with the recruitment of Deunta Williams, a blue chip athlete also from Jacksonville, who is considered to be the other half of potential package deal.
"He was the first one to know, I talked to him last night about it and he said to go for it," said Burney. "I would love for him to come with me, but I just want him to go wherever he feels comfortable. I think he is real comfortable with coming to Carolina."
Burney is "Mr. Everything" for the back-to-back NCHSAA 2A State Champions Southwest Onslow. From his quarterback position, Burney completed 26-of-56 passes for 521 yards and seven touchdowns with only two interceptions. Additionally, he rushed for 920 yards and 14 touchdowns on just 124 rushes.
From his defensive back position, he recorded 92 tackles (25 solo) including six tackles for a loss. He also deflected seven passes and intercepted five others.
Burney also returns kicks and punt where he returned two kicks for touchdowns.
He is being recruited by UNC to play cornerback and as a returner for the Tar Heels. Also a star on the diamond, Burney plans to walk-on the baseball team at centerfield.
