Shaver back in title hunt

Former Tar Heel Tony Shaver ('76) has once again guided Hampden-Sydney College (Va.) to another berth in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament.

Coach Shaver's Hampden-Sydney Tigers (22-5) earned an automatic bid to the 2002 D-3 national tournament last Monday with an Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament Championship Game victory over ODAC regular season champ Randolph-Macon.

Shaver, in his 16th year as head coach at Hampden-Sydney, has now won 8 conference titles and is making his 10th trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Hampden-Sydney will play a 1st Round game at home on Thursday night, Feb. 28, against North Carolina Wesleyan (20-7), the champs of the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The 2nd Round opponent for the winner will be last year's D-3 champion, Catholic University, in Washington D.C., on Saturday, March 2.
