Tar Heels and Hurricanes Agree to Two-year Series

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina has agreed to a home-and-home football series with Miami (Fla.), in 2006 and 2009. Four years ago Athletic Director Dick Baddour began an effort to strengthen Carolina's non-conference football schedules. With the addition of Miami, UNC's future schedules should be considered some of the strongest in the country.

"I'm excited to add Miami to our future non-conference schedules,* said UNC Athletic Director Dick Baddour. "We needed to strengthen our 2006 home schedule and I had been talking with Miami about a football series for some time. Obviously, Miami is one of the nation's top programs and I want to continue to face a challenging schedule. I want to thank the University of Connecticut for its cooperation in moving our scheduled game from 2006 to 2008."

The Tar Heels will play host to the Hurricanes on Sept. 9, 2006, and will travel to Miami on Sept. 26, 2009. Carolina's game against Connecticut, originally scheduled for Sept. 9, 2006, will be moved to 2008. Carolina now will play Connecticut in 2008 and 2009.

"I'm excited we were able to work out a two-year series with Miami," said UNC head coach John Bunting. "I appreciate the work Dick Baddour did to make this happen. Miami has a great football tradition and it's important that we continue to play teams of that caliber. It's exciting for our fans, it helps our team improve and it's important to tell recruits we are going to play a Top 10 schedule each season."

Carolina and Miami have met on seven previous occasions with the Tar Heels holding a slim 4-3 advantage. The two teams have not met since 1963 when the Tar Heels defeated Miami, 27-16, in Chapel Hill. The six other games were played in Miami.
