Powell: 'My Commitment Is Firm'

Waldorf (Md.) Westlake linebacker Darius Powell committed on his trip to North Carolina this past week and says he's firm with his pledge to the Tar Heels.

"I really liked the combination of the campus and the academic situation at Carolina," Darius Powell (6-3, 205) told Inside Carolina on Saturday. "I don't plan to take any other visits and I consider my commitment to be firm."

Powell was impressed by his recruiting coach from North Carolina, Tommy Thigpen.

"I'd say Coach Thigpen is 50 percent of the reason I chose North Carolina," he said. "He is really cool and I like the way he recruited me."

Powell's teammate Aaris Reed came close to committing to UNC as well.

"He wanted to commit but our coach wanted him to check out a few more schools," Powell said. Meanwhile, Coach Dominic Zaccarelli gave Powell the green light to pull the trigger and tell Coach Bunting the good news.

"Coach Bunting asked me if I lived football, and I said, ‘Yes,'" said Powell. "He said, ‘Good, because that is the kind of player we want.'"
