NBPA: Alex Stepheson Spotlight

RICHMOND, Va. --- Alex Stepheson remains in a holding pattern in his recruitment, but he plans to finish up fast and furious with a decision this fall prior to the November early signing period.

"I still have five or six schools on the list," Stepheson remarked, "North Carolina, UConn, Arizona, Georgia Tech, Washington. I'm just waiting for the fall to take my visits. I'll take my visits really quick in September - probably all five of them - and make the decision in the fall."

Following the Memorial Day Tournament of Champions in North Carolina, Stepheson and his mother took an unofficial visit to UNC where they met with head coach Roy Williams.

"It was good, really good," Stepheson said. "We met with Coach Williams, and he sat down with my mom and just talked with us. We took the tour and all that."

He said that there is no magical formula that will earn his signature on a national letter of intent; rather it will be the feeling he and his family get on the official visit after visiting the campus, the coaches, and the players.

One of his good friends at the camp is Tywon Lawson, with whom he visited France on the USA Elite Junior National Team, but he insists that they do not talk about recruiting.

"Those decisions are all individual," he said. "We don't really talk about that at all, teaming up and stuff."

As for Stepheson's experience this week at the NBPA Camp, it is quite a bit different than being on a high school team. You have to come together literally overnight.

"It's fun," he said. "It's kind of different, but it's fun. You just have to talk to the [other] players, tell them where you like the ball, when you don't like the ball. You just have to communicate more, but it is fun getting to know everybody, hanging out and stuff."

Stepheson has been up and down on offense this week, but has held his own on the boards. He's such a kind and mild-mannered person off the court that it sometimes seems to carry over to what happens on the court, but it's something that he knows and is working to improve.

"Off the court my parents have always told me to be respectful and well-mannered the best I can" Stepheson explained, "but on the court I try to be as mean and tough as I can and be really aggressive."
