Byron Sanders readies for shot at state title

Rashad McCants already has his title. Now the other Tar Heel recruits are trying to join him.

The first one with a chance to add some hardware is the least-publicized of the five senior recruits, Byron Sanders.

The 6-8 forward and his Harrison Central (Miss.) teammates will meet a familiar foe tonight in Gulfport High in the Class 5A title game at the Mississippi Coliseum. The two teams have already met five times this season, with Gulfport coming out on top in the first four by an average of 12 points.

The game tips off at 8 p.m. in Jackson. Harrison Central is the only team to have knocked off the Admirals, who enter the game with a 36-1 mark and seven state titles to their credit. Harrison Central won the state crown two years ago under coach Ricky Stone.

Harrison Central defeated Meridian, 57-55, on Monday night to earn a spot in the championship game. Sanders finished with 18 points in the victory despite playing down the stretch in foul trouble.
