While Huggins was the top candidate, North Carolina assistant Doug Wojcik was receiving serious consideration.

WVU athletic director Ed Pastilong was in Chapel Hill on Feb. 27 to watch Wojcik, a West Virginia native, coach a UNC JV game. Wojcik interviewed for the position the following day.

"We're going to talk to two or three assistants, and he's right there," Pastilong told the N&O that day. "In the references he had from [UNC coach Matt] Doherty and [athletics director] Dick Baddour, and the fact that he coached in the Big East with Doherty [at Notre Dame], I felt I had to come talk to him. So far, I can't say enough about him."
