North Carolina LB Larry Edwards, a junior from Tampa, might be the most physically gifted player on the Tar Heels' defense, but he hasn't cracked the starting lineup because hasn't demonstrated his dependability, Coach John Bunting said. Edwards will enter preseason practice trying to displace senior Jeff Longhany for a starting role.

ACC commissioner John Swofford an-nounced Tuesday that the league has reached four-year agreements with seven bowls beginning in 2006, adding the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco and the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn. The two newcomers, along with the five bowl tie-ins that already existed and the ACC's guaranteed spot in the Bowl Championship Series, will assure eight spots for the league's 12 teams.

ACC officials' video replay goal is to limit stoppage of play to 90 seconds, officiating coordinator Tommy Hunt said. Hunt demonstrated the replay system to the media Tuesday. Each game will have a minimum of four cameras and as many as seven or eight available to the "technical advisor," who has ultimate authority over replay.

Denver Nuggets coach George Karl is scheduled to undergo prostate cancer surgery in Salt Lake City on Thursday. Nuggets spokeswoman Teri Washington said Tuesday that Karl, who was diagnosed with cancer near the end of last season, expects to be released from the hospital on Sunday
