Bunting has dismissed quarterback Aaron Leak and linebacker Kitwana Jones from the football team for conduct detrimental to the team. A native of Durham, N.C., Leak played in two games last season (Florida State & Duke), completing 1 of 4 pass attempts for 24 yards. Leak and freshman defensive back Ronnie Bryant were indefinitely suspended following their arrests in December 2001. In addition to court ordered community service, Bryant will have to complete several other team requirements before he is considered for reinstatement.
A native of Wilmington, N.C., Jones played in nine games last season and had three tackles. He was indefinitely suspended in October 2001, after breaking team rules.
"I'm committed to developing a winning football program with players who will represent this University in a first-class manner on and off the field," said Bunting. "I'm disappointed in the off-field actions of a few of our players. As a North Carolina alumnus, I feel very strongly in directing a program that our fans can be proud of at all times. We work hard in recruiting to identify good citizens as well as good football players and students. My staff and I will continue to work with each young player to teach them to make the right decisions in the future."
