Elzy To Carolina

North Carolina has received another football commitment for the Class of 2006. Warren (Ohio) Kennedy tailback Anthony Elzy told Inside Carolina on Monday that he has accepted a scholarship offer from the Tar Heels.

"Yes sir," Elzy said. "I committed to UNC two days ago."

Elzy, 5-10, 195, with ‘4.4-speed,' held an offer from Carolina, as well as from Pittsburgh and Maryland. But he said he really wasn't seriously considering UNC until he visited Chapel Hill with his father at the end of June.

"I was just impressed with how well the coaches interacted with the players," he said. "The coaches really care."

Elzy's father was sold on UNC's atmosphere and academic support system for athletes.

"The alumni really stick around," Elzy said. "My dad really liked that."

UNC graduate assistant coach Matt House began recruiting Elzy earlier this year, then running backs coach Andre' Powell sealed the deal.

Elzy said he is being recruited to play tailback at UNC.

On UNC head coach John Bunting, Elzy said, "He was a real laid back type of coach. He was the type of coach that doesn't take any slack."

Elzy ran for 2,338 yards on 221 carries with 30 touchdowns as a junior, and was named Ohio Co-Offensive Player of the Year for Division V.

Scout.com East Recruiting Analyst Bob Lichtenfels had this to say about Elzy:

"Elzy runs slightly upright, but he has a small enough center of gravity that doesn't really make it a problem. He has a very strong lower body, he sheds tackles rather easily. He has a great blend of downhill speed and cutback ability. Elzy is also a threat as a receiver out of the backfield. He has been very productive throughout his high school career."
