Thompson Schedules UNC Visit

The past few weeks have been far from normal for Deon Thompson. The 6-foot-8 power forward, saw his stock rise from a solid prospect, to one of the hottest recruits in the country.

Going into the Vegas tournament, Thompson had an offer from Arizona State, and a some contact with a few other schools. But according to his high school coach, George Tachibana, Thompson now has offers from all seven of the schools on his narrowed down list. The seven schools on the list are North Carolina, Kentucky, UConn, Wake Forest, Gonzaga, UCLA, and Arizona State.

"He couldn't narrow it down anymore. We tried. So now he's got to start planning visits," Tachibana explained. "Whoever he talks to last he likes the most. They are all pretty impressive. They are good at what they do as far as recruiting. It's going to be a real tough decision for him, because he likes all of them."

Thompson probably won't be narrowing his list any further until he takes his visits. The plan is to take unofficial visits to Arizona State and UCLA, and take his five official visits to the remaining schools.

Only one official visit date has been set up and that is to North Carolina on September 30th. The other visits will be after schools starts in early September.

"North Carolina, there isn't much more to say. I mean Roy Williams had four guys going in the first round in the NBA. There's a rare opportunity there, where there aren't a lot of bigs there right now," Tachibana said. "And you know they're North Carolina, so they're going to get the best of the best. But he's not going in behind four big men already. It's a great opportunity and he'd get to learn from Roy Williams for four years. That'd be pretty hard to pass up."

While North Carolina is extremely far from Torrance, Calif., where Thompson lives, Coach Tachibana said that distance would not be a factor in the decision at all. Tachibana also touched on another school on the other side of the country.

"Wake Forest is an ACC school, but what has really impressed us is the academic end as well. They have a 10-1 student to teacher ratio, it's a small school environment with big time basketball."

According to his high school coach, Thompson, who averaged 20 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks a game, is still a bit overwhelmed with his recent recruitment.

"It's all kind of overwhelming because it's just been the past week or two that it's really heated up," Tachibana said.
