Surgery For Heinz

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- University of North Carolina reserve quarterback Roger Heinz is scheduled to have back surgery on Wednesday (August 24) and is expected to miss the 2005 season. Heinz, who began experiencing back pain this summer, will have surgery to repair two herniated discs.

"We had hoped this could wait until the end of the season, but he is in too much pain to continue so we want to go ahead and get it done," said head coach John Bunting. "I'm disappointed for Roger and our team."

A sophomore from Tallahassee, Fla., Heinz entered preseason practice second on the depth chart behind senior Matt Baker. Heinz redshirted in 2003 and played in just one game at quarterback in 2004 at Florida State. He also served as the team's holder early in the year.

Joey Bozich, a redshirt freshman from Hinsdale, Ill., will compete with walk-ons Ben Johnson, Jay Spence and true freshman Bobby Rome as Baker's backup. Baker completed 17 of 26 attempts for 172 yards and a touchdown in last Saturday's scrimmage.
