"I thought we got a lot of things done tonight," said head coach John Bunting. "We were able to get the running game going well early in the scrimmage and I thought the special teams looked good for the most part. We need to work on cleaning up the procedure penalties, but overall I was pleased."
Tailbacks Barrington Edwards, Justin Warren and Cooter Arnold received the majority of the carries. Edwards had seven carries for 30 yards and scored a touchdown. He later scored a second touchdown in the Tar Heels' goal-line package. A walk-on from Germantown, Md., Warren led all rushers with 34 yards on seven carries, while Arnold had six attempts for 12 yards. Another true freshman, Richie Rich, had five carries for 28 yards and a touchdown.
"Cooter has a good feel for the game and a good burst," said Bunting. "He's able to run away from people. He's far beyond my expectations as a freshman."
Behind Baker, redshirt freshman Joey Bozich and sophomore walk-on Ben Johnson received much of the work. Bozich was 5 of 12 for 79 yards and Johnson was 8 of 13 for 78 yards. Fourteen different receivers had catches, led by Jesse Holley's four grabs for 62 yards.
Defensively, Quinton Person and D.J. Walker each had one interception.
The Tar Heels, who do not open the season until Sept. 10 at Georgia Tech, return to the practice field on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
