Carolina And Tennessee Schedule Football Series

Chapel Hill -- The University of North Carolina has signed a contract to play a home-and-home football series with the University of Tennessee, Athletic Director Dick Baddour announced on Tuesday.

North Carolina will play host to the Volunteers on September 24, 2011, in Kenan Stadium and will visit Knoxville on September 8, 2012. North Carolina and Tennessee have met 31 times on the gridiron with the Vols holding a 20-10-1 advantage. The two schools have not met since 1961, a 22-21 Carolina victory in Chapel Hill.

"Tennessee has great tradition and is an attractive opponent for any school, let alone one that shares its border," says Director of Athletics Dick Baddour. "The two teams have not played in many years, but we know there will tremendous interest in this game from fans of both states and across the southeast."

North Carolina now has completed its non-conference schedule through the year 2011. In addition to facing Colorado in 2008 and 2009, the Tar Heels agreed to face Rutgers in an additional two game series in 2010 and 2011. The Scarlet Knights are also on the schedule in 2006 and 2008.

Carolina has added home games against Furman in 2006, The Citadel in 2009 and William & Mary in 2010. Coupled with last week's announcement of future games against South Carolina and James Madison, North Carolina has filled its non-conference slate for the next six years. Tennessee is the only game currently scheduled in 2012.
