1957 Championship Reunion

Earlier this year, Pete Brennan stood up at an Outer Banks Rams Club meeting and presented an idea. He wanted to reunite with his former teammates from the 1957 North Carolina undefeated national championship team. Next week, it will become a reality.

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, the '57 team will convene for "An Evening with Carolina Champions" in Nags Head, N.C., joined by Roy Williams, Eric Montross, Sylvia Hatchell, and Woody Durham as the evening's MC.

"Pete Brennan came to a board meeting and said, 'I'd like to get the guys together one more time. Would you be interested in doing that?'" recalled chapter vice president Al Byrum. "We all agreed it was a good idea and wanted to give them all an evening to remember."

The tent (provided by Gateway Bank) outside Prime Only Steakhouse (2706 South Croatan Highway) will open at 5 p.m. for cocktails, followed by a filet dinner at 7 p.m. Woody Durham will begin the program at about 8 p.m., talking to the special guests. Autographed memorabilia will be auctioned off and given out as door prizes at the end of the night.

"If you think about it, they started the tradition of Carolina basketball we enjoy today," Byrum said. "They are the ones who made Carolina basketball a national name."

High demand has raised the ticket capacity to 850—though as of Wednesday afternoon, only 25 tickets remained. Each ticket is $50 and includes dinner and wine. If you're interested in attending, contact Al Byrum at 252-449-0708. Proceeds will benefit the Rams Club.
