Darryl Watkins update

Darryl Watkins had North Carolina towards the top of his list early this past season, but the Tar Heels have fallen a bit.

The 6-11, 235-pound junior big man from Paterson Catholic (N.J.) is extremely athletic and dominates on the defensive end. However, he needs to refine his offensive game before he becomes an impact player in college.

Watkins sat out the first 30 days of this past season after transferring from Passaic Tech (N.J.).

"My biggest improvement over the last few months is with blocking shots and rebounding," Watkins said. "I still need to improve my shooting."

Watkins is more comfortable with his back to the basket, and must develop a mid-range jumper. He is one of the main cogs for a loaded Tim Thomas Playaz team this summer.

"The schools I'm looking at are Syracuse, Villanova, Maryland and Duke," Watkins said. "North Carolina is still in the group, but they aren't quite as high as they were before."

"No one's the leader right now, though," he added.

Watkins and his AAU teammates are in Houston this weekend for the Superstars tournament.
