Carmichael, a 6-foot-1, 235-pound linebacker from Woodstock (Ga.), plans to eventually officially visit Chapel Hill along with Southern Miss, Miami (Ohio), and Middle Tennessee State. MTSU and UNC are still his lone offers, but both Southern Miss and Miami appear on the verge of offering.
Linebacker is definitely a position the UNC coaching staff plans to secure with the few remaining commitment spots.
"[Coach Thigpen] thinks I could get some playing time my freshmen year," said Carmichael. "He likes me a lot and he thinks I could help the program out a lot."
For some time now the Tar Heels have shared the leadership position for Carmichael's commitment with Georgia. North Carolina continues its upward climb with their strong interest and Georgia's lack of an offer.
"Right now, I'd probably say [the Tar Heels are] definitely top two," said Carmichael. "If Georgia doesn't offer, I'd probably go to Carolina.
"It's a college town – everybody takes pride in the school, it's a beautiful place, I love the coaches, and I like the possibility to play early."
With Carmichael patrolling sideline-to-sideline on defense, Woodstock owns a 4-1 record. Thus far, Carmichael has accumulated 46 tackles (31 solo), one interception, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and five sacks.
