Mickey Rice, Jr. Vitals
Inside Carolina: What do your friends call you?
Mickey Rice: Mickey or Big Mick.
IC: Mickey, why did you choose North Carolina?
Rice: The facilities are great. The graduation rate is among the best anywhere and the academics are outstanding.
IC: How many times have you visited Chapel Hill?
Rice: Three times. I went up for an unofficial visit for the Duke game. My official visit was January 18, and I went up for the spring game last weekend with Big E.
IC: Is Big E, Eric Young? (Rising Senior OL already offered by Clemson and South Carolina).
IC: Have you talked to Eric about North Carolina?
Rice: Yes, he is real interested in North Carolina. He says that they are in his top two or three.
IC: What would you like to major in?
Rice: I plan to major in sports medicine.
IC: I know you participated in the Shrine Bowl. How did you do there?
Rice: I had 5 tackles and 2 sacks in the Shrine Bowl.
IC: How long have you been playing football?
Rice: I started playing when I was in the 5th grade.
IC: Have you played other sports?
Rice: I played baseball in the 5th and 6th grade. I played basketball until the 9th grade and did the shot put and discus in track until a couple of years ago.
IC: Who was your primary recruiter?
Rice: Coach Caldwell until he left and then Coach Powell.
IC: What did Coach Bunting say when you committed?
Rice: He was very excited. I like Coach Bunting very much. I think we have a chance to go to many more bowl games and maybe even win a national championship someday.
IC: What do you like most about football?
Rice: I like it because it is a team sport. Probably the most team oriented sport there is. Everyone has to do their part in order to be successful. The defensive players have to tackle. The OL has to block. The receivers have to catch the ball. The runners run.
IC: Do you have a favorite football player?
Rice: I have always liked Warren Sapp.
IC: Did you have a favorite college team growing up?
Rice: I have always liked Florida State. I have family that lives pretty close to Tallahassee and I always used to follow them.
IC: Do you think you will enjoy playing against them?
Rice: Oh yes.
IC: What do you like about the North Carolina defense?
Rice: They are always attacking. They don't lay back and wait.
IC: Has Coach Connors given you a workout program?
Rice: Yes. I have been on it for about a month now.
IC: Could you describe it for us?
Rice: It is somewhat similar to what I am used to. I do lots of reps as far as lifting. I do 5 sets of 6 reps at about 90% of max for various lifts. As far as running, we do 18 gases that consists of running sideline to sideline with time limits associated.
IC: Have you noticed a difference in your speed and strength?
Rice: Yes I have. I am gradually getting faster and stronger.
IC: You plan on moving to Chapel Hill in mid-June is that correct?
Rice: Yes. I am anxious to get started with Coach Connors.
IC: Thanks Mickey. Carolina fans will be cheering for you when you play.
