Stepheson Nearing Decision

Shortly after receiving a commitment from a California post player, the North Carolina could be on the verge of adding another.

The recruitment of Alex Stepheson is coming to an end.

"Hopefully he'll be able to decide by the end of this week," said Harvard-Westlake coach Greg Hilliard. "He gave me the indication that they'd like to have it done by early next week unless it becomes too difficult to decide."

"That's their goal," Hilliard added.

But according to sources involved in his recruitment, a decision could conceivably come any day now.

Stepheson concluded his fourth and final official visit Tuesday afternoon, returning from a short trip to UCLA. He has already visited Georgia Tech, North Carolina and UConn. Washington is no longer in consideration.

Today (Oct. 5) is a significant date in the recruiting calender as it marks the end of the NCAA's allowed "contact period," meaning coaches are now held to the guideline of only making "live evaluations" during high school games or practices.

Therefore, the coaches from the four schools on his list have been regulars in North Hollywood trying to make the most of the final days of the contact period.

"All these coaches have been in here the last week," Hilliard said. "Last night Roy Williams came in, today a UConn assistant is coming. Over the last couple of weeks Paul Hewitt and Jim Calhoun have been in twice."

And, after today, all that will be left is a decision.
