Hunter Working To Return

Former North Carolina defensive tackle Terry Hunter is living at his Wendell home and taking classes at UNC via the Internet; and could return to the Tar Heels' football team by next summer, according to his high school coach.

East Wake coach Jimmy Williams told Inside Carolina on Friday that grades were the reason he was unable to remain as a traditional student, but that if he can improve his GPA this year, then he would be eligible to return to campus and, ultimately, the football team.

"He's working hard on his schoolwork," Williams said. "He never even considered looking into another school. He really wants to return to Carolina next year."

As reported here on Aug. 16, John Bunting left the door open for Hunter's possible return for the first time after stating he was "suspended indefinitely" following a Feb. 1 citation.

"I'm not going to say that he couldn't earn his way back by doing some really great things," Bunting said then. "The greatest pleasure you have in coaching college football is seeing someone turn it around."

While Williams has not been given any assurances from the UNC coaches that Hunter will be allowed to join the team, he did say he expects Hunter to be reinstated "if he can straighten his grades out."
