Gavin Smith Visits Chapel Hill

The North Carolina Tar Heels received a visit from NC State verbal commitment Gavin Smith for the Carolina-Virginia game this past Saturday.

Smith has offers from NCSU and Duke, but has not been offered by the Tar Heels yet, although they are still recruiting him. He has attended a couple of North Carolina games already and plans to be in the stadium for the UNC-Boston College matchup in two weeks.

Smith was impressed with UNC's defensive effort against the Cavs.

"Their defense played really well," he said. "I know that Virginia was coming off a big win against Florida State and they did a good job keeping them out of the endzone the entire game."

Smith, at 6-4, 260 pounds, is being recruited to play defensive tackle for the Tar Heels by assistant coach Kenny Browning. His Raleigh (N.C.) Wakefield team is undefeated this season and looks to make a title run this fall. He's currently ranked No. 20 in the state by Scout.com.

"I am not sure if I will go on official visits or not," Smith said. "I really haven't talked about it with the coaches."
