Heels inquire about Virgin Islands center?

According to RivalsHoops, the UNC coaching staff today called to inquire about Omari Peterkin -- a player who seemingly appeared out of nowhere and is suddenly receiving serious interest from elite schools.

According to RivalsHoops, Peterkin worked out for Kentucky this week and will vist Lexington next weekend on an official visit. Indiana scouting him yesterday, while Michigan State and Georga will watch him in the coming days.

So, who is Omari Peterkin?

The 6-9, 260-pound senior center is a native of the Virgin Islands, where he has emerged as one of the territory's top basketball players. At international camps last summer, he earned high praise.

"Omari has a huge body and he moves fairly well for his size," the International Scouting Service wrote last summer. "He has very good strength and uses his body well inside to establish and maintain position. He scores consistently inside with the drop-step and uses the 'Worthy' move effectively. He knows how to block shots and keep them in play."

Peterkin, who was 6-5 and 240 pounds at the age of 15, has also played football and tennis at his private school.

While he is a senior, RivalsHoops reports there is the possibility he could elect to head to prep school -- or walk-on this fall.

And, while UNC's newfound interest in Peterkin may or may not develop, he's an intriguing prospect and certainly a player to keep an eye on ...
