Major Wingate update

Major Wingate has never hid his admiration for the North Carolina basketball program, but according to Florence Wilson High (S.C.) coach Tommy Johnson, the Tar Heels are no longer interested in the highly-touted junior big man.

Wingate, who has been a familiar name on the national landscape ever since the eighth grade, is a physical specimen at 6-10 and 255 pounds. However, the soft-spoken Wingate, whose cousin is UNC recruit Raymond Felton, doesn't always play hard – and that may have scared Matt Doherty & Co. away.

Sources close to North Carolina program also confirmed the fact that the staff has halted its recruitment of Wingate.

"We haven't heard from them in a while," Johnson said of UNC. "I thought they would have been by here in April, when they could be on campus. I don't know if they got what they wanted or why they're not still interested."

Wingate averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks per game this past season. He was unavailable for comment, although he has stated in the past that his top three schools are South Carolina, Florida and North Carolina.

"I am really surprised how you have a kid that close to you and not be interested," Johnson added. "I don't know how a Major Wingate can't help you."

Also, sources close to the program said that UNC is, for the most part, no longer recruiting Darryl Watkins, the 6-11, 235-pound junior big man from Paterson Catholic (N.J.).
