Junior DT Likes UNC

As the North Carolina coaching staff puts the finishing touches on their 2006 recruiting class, they are also getting a jump start on some of the top members of the class of 2007 -- including Tydreke Powell, a 6-foot-4 295-pound defensive lineman from Ahoskie (N.C.) Hertford County.

"I'm getting interest from UNC and NC State mostly," said Powell. "No one has offered [a scholarship] yet, though."

Although Powell's Signing Day is over a year away, he hasn't shied away from naming an early leader.

"Just UNC [stands out]," said Powell. "I like them a real lot. I've been following Julius Peppers. I also like their facilities, and their program."

Powell likes the Tar Heels so much that Chapel Hill is the only school he has unofficially visited this fall.

"I've been to a few games at UNC," said Powell. "I've been to the Boston College, UVa and Maryland games."

While Peppers starred at defensive end for the Tar Heels, the UNC coaching staff is looking to recruit Powell at his more natural tackle position.

Powell's junior season ended a few weeks back when Hertford County was eliminated from the NCHSAA 3A playoffs by Western Alamance. During the game, Powell recorded eight tackles (five solo) including a sack and two tackles for a loss. He also forced a fumble with a vicious hit.

"I did well," said Powell. "I'll be better next year, because I'm nothing but a junior."
