HS Coach: 'Massenburg Will Make It'

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – North Carolina commitment Darius Massenburg could probably qualify for university admission today, but he will finish out the spring semester at Hargrave Military Academy just to be sure, his former high school coach told Inside Carolina on Friday.

According to Roanoke Rapids coach Tim Bennett, who is one of the assistants for the 2005 N.C. Shrine Bowl team, said Darius Massenburg had scored high enough on his SAT and has done well in his classes. But the UNC coaches want him to take it a couple of more times to give him extra leverage with his GPA.

"Just to give himself a little buffer zone," Bennett said. "He's going to be in Chapel Hill unless he just all of a sudden stops working. I saw his [fall] grades with my on eyes: As and Bs. His momma showed me his transcript last night.

"Last year I knew it was going to be close. But I feel really good about it."

Bennett said Massenburg had lost some weight, but was impressed with his season performance at Hargrave as well as his combine results.

"He really doesn't like the food over there, but his momma told me she is going to get his weight back up right over Christmas," Bennett said. "He's just an outstanding player and person."
