Smith, a 6-foot-4 265-pound defensive tackle from Raleigh (N.C.) Wakefield, originally committed to N.C. State during his junior season and officially visited the Wolfpack on October 28th. Before heading to Chapel Hill, he will make official trips to both Virginia [January 20th] and South Carolina [January 13th].
With the exception of the Tar Heels, Smith has received scholarship offers from each of the schools he has or will officially visit. Smith hopes to receive a better understanding of UNC's scholarship situation and where he fits into their plans during his official visit.
"They said they have two or three [scholarship offers] left," said Smith. "I don't really know how they're going to determine if I get one of them. I guess I'll find out during the visit."
Smith recently spoke with his recruiting coordinator at UNC, Ken Browning.
"He [Coach Ken Browning] came to my school yesterday [Wednesday] and we talked for awhile," he said.
Smith will make a final decision on National Signing Day in three weeks.
With Smith's dominating play anchoring the defensive line, Wakefield ended the regular season undefeated (11-0) and weren't eliminated from the NCHSAA 4A playoffs until the semifinals.
