Key Weekend For UNC Football

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- With less than three weeks until Signing Day, the Carolina football staff will work this weekend to finalize what is already an impressive recruiting haul.

There are limited scholarships remaining, yet the UNC coaches are targeting a select few remaining prospects -- one of which is Brian Whitmore, who will be taking his official visit this weekend.

A 6-4, 240-pound defensive end from Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar F. Smith, Whitmore is ranked No. 20 in the nation at his position by Scout.com.

"It's an important weekend for UNC because they've got Whitmore coming in and he's another one of those potential jewels," said Scout.com regional analyst Miller Safrit. "He's the type of prospect who is a big-time player at a position that they really need.

"He's one of the last few guys left, and adding him -- like they did with Jarrell Miller -- would make a strong statement that the UNC recruiting staff is making in-roads with elite regional talent."

Whitmore, who has backed off a December commitment to Maryland, will also visit South Carolina and Virginia Tech later this month.

But no matter how Whitmore's recruitment ends up, this is still a key weekend for the future of UNC football due to the number of already-committed players who will be in town.

"It's important because you're getting all these committed guys in and developing a good relationship with all of them and they're furthering their relationship with each other," Safrit said. "That alone makes it an important weekend."

The following ten players that have already committed to UNC have been confirmed as coming to Chapel Hill this weekend and are listed in the Scout.com Visit Database ...

Shaun Draughn
Johnny White
Hakeem Nicks
Tavares Brown
Aaris Reed
Ed Barham
LeCount Fantroy
Logan Buchanan
Darius Powell
Anthony Parker-Boyd

Safrit said this year's UNC recruiting class is already impressive.

"Right now they're ranked No. 21 and I think it'll end up being a Top 30 class," he said. "If they get Whitmore, they could stick in the Top 25. Regardless of rankings, this is a great class and probably pretty underrated. There are a lot of guys with terrific potential down the road."
