TOC: JamesOn Curry Spotlight

CHAPEL HILL - Sophomore star JamesOn Curry played two games at the Smith Center on Saturday, including one against Raymond Felton's Beach Ball Select.

Curry scored 18 points and dished out six assists on Saturday morning against a team from Minnesota.

Most of his scoring came in an early first-half spurt, where he recorded a quick 10 points by way of two jumpers, a baseline three and a runner in the lane. Most striking about Curry's game is the smooth picture-perfect shot, which hit nothing but net during the run.

His defense deserves recognition as well, as his speed and athleticism enable him to cover the court and close distances in a hurry. On one occasion, he skied to steal a long fast break pass and then hit a streaking teammate with a no-look dish. And, with the game was on the line, Curry blocked the game-winning three-point attempt as time expired.

The much-hyped evening matchup between Curry (moving up from the Gaters 16-under team) and Raymond Felton turned out to be a disappointment, as Curry played in a reserve role, never going head-tohead against Felton, in a blowout win. Curry had three points, highlighted by an alley-oop finish late in the game, and four assists. Felton totaled 27 points (12-21 FG, 2-7 3pt), six rebounds and two assists.

While it might not matter at all, the main thing Curry lacks is size, as he's quite thin and is 6-1, according to the IC tape measurer.

As for colleges and all that, our postgame interview made one aspect of Curry's recruitment abundently clear -- he is Carolina's to lose.

Postgame Quotes --

We know you can score, but you showed some strong defense today, too.

"Yeah, offense wins games, defense wins championships – and we're trying to win championships."

Talk about playing against Raymond Felton.

"That's my buddy – the best point guard in the nation. If you want to be a top player you got to play top players. I'd love to [play with him in college], but he might already be in the league."

What schools are you considering other than Carolina?

"pause … Kentucky, everybody really …"

Do you have any sort of timetable for a decision?

"I was thinking about doing an announcement at Nike Camp [in July] but now I think right before the season next year."

There have been reports that you're considering transferring to Oak Hill Academy …

"[Look at] Ray at Latta. He got the recognition at that school. It's been on my mind, but I haven't considered it yet. If we win the state championship next year, then there's really nothing left to prove and I might want to take it to a national level."

Could you envision yourself leaving the area to go to college?

"Nah, I can't leave the area. I don't think so – gotta have mamma's cooking."

Why Carolina?

"When I came in here I saw all the jerseys – saw all the greats up there."

What's it mean to you to be offered a scholarship by a school like UNC at such an early age?

"It's a major accomplishment, but every night you've got to go out and show that you deserve the scholarship – and make sure it stays there."

Do you prefer playing the point or the off-guard?

"I like both. And I like the ball in my hand at crunch time."
