TOC: Sean Banks Spotlight

CHAPEL HILL - Sean Banks led the Tim Thomas Playaz Gold squad to the Tournament of Champions title on Sunday afternoon at the Smith Center. The talented wing from New Jersey took home MVP honors -- and thoroughly surprised us with his postgame comments.

Banks, 6-7 -- and growing -- from Bergen Catholic (NJ), is the prototypical wing player. He's everything you want at that position, as he handles the ball like a point guard, burns defenders off the dribble, hits threes and has a great mid-range game.

"He's got lots of different scoring skills and shot better this weekend than I've seen before," said Michael Kruse, of Basketball America. "When his shot is going down, it opens up his game. Defense isn't his strong suit, but when he's on, he's unstoppable on offense. This was his best tournament of the spring."

So why aren't more of the nation's elite teams recruiting him?

According to our sources close to some Big East colleges, his attitude was deemed questionable, and so these particular two schools decided to look elsewhere.

Maryland has apparently not been deterred by the attitude questions, as the Terps are reportedly his favorite.

Postgame Interview with Inside Carolina -

What schools are you looking at now? Have you narrowed it down?

"I've narrowed it down to seven or eight, but I've got like three top schools. I like Maryland, Pitt, and NC State."

What other schools are you considering other than those three?

"Rutgers, West Virginia, Seton Hall, St. John's, and there are others – Texas also."

Are you getting any interest from UNC or Duke?

"I had some from UNC. Coach Doherty came to visit my school and everything. As far as contact, I really won't know until he gets to call me. Until that happens, I don't know."

Would there be any interest on your part, if UNC had some interest in you?

"If they offered me, I probably would commit. I always wanted to go to UNC since I was little."

Do you have a time table as to when you would like to make a decision?

"I don't know. Anywhere from the summer of camps to the fall."

Will you try to contact them? I am not sure what the NCAA allows, but at some point, you can contact them.

"You can make contact, but I don't think my coaches really want me to do that. I would, but they told me, and I'm not going to go against their wishes. They told me to just chill and to wait."

Why do you think they are discouraging that?

"Maybe they don't want me to show too much interest. They want the school to show interest in me, because the school might not even be interested in me. I could be wasting my time."
