Powell: 'I Felt At Home'

WALDORF, Md. – North Carolina 2006 signee Darius Powell of Waldorf, Md., faxed his national Letter of Intent to the UNC coaches' office early Wednesday morning and then participated in a Signing Day ceremony at West Lake High School.

"I've always wanted to play football in college since I was young," Powell said. "It just feels real good to know that you're going to school and with the opportunity to play at the Division I level.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound defensive end verbally committed on June 19 to the Tar Heels. He also played tight end at the prep level, but Powell said the Carolina coaches have told him they want to use him on the defensive side of the ball.

Powell had several offers and narrowed his list to Michigan State, Syracuse, Maryland and Boston College, before ultimately deciding on the Tar Heels. And with family members currently living in N.C., as well as his father being an avid Carolina fan; the decision for Powell was clear.

"I was impressed the most with UNC's academics, as opposed to the other schools that I had offers from," he said. "Next it was the players: I felt at home with everyone down there. And the coaches were real nice, too."

As a senior, Powell recorded 68 tackles – 20 for loss – and 10 sacks on his way to second team all-conference honors. He also recovered two fumbles and returned one for a touchdown.
