Mullins Chooses the Heels

Wendell (N.C.) East Wake defensive lineman Aleric Mullins announced his decision to attend North Carolina on national television Wednesday afternoon, choosing the Tar Heels over Auburn and Tennessee.

"The next four years I'll be going to the University of North Carolina," Mullins said on ESPNU.

"All these schools were so close - it actually took a lot longer than I expected it to take, but after sitting down last night with my coaches I came to the decision that North Carolina would be the best place for me."

Mullins is the top defensive lineman in the state of North Carolina, according to He also is ranked the No. 3 defensive tackle in the nation by ESPN.

"I moved a lot over the years and settled here in Carolina," he said when asked about whether being close to family was a factor. "I enjoy being here so I decided to stay here."

As for his expectations as a freshman at UNC? The Tar Heel coaches expect him to be on the field this fall.

"They expect me to come in ... pretty much third down situations - but I'm just looking to get in where I fit in," Mullins told ESPNU.

Mullins reflected on his recruitment, which peaked this past weekend.

"It started my sophomore year, picked up my junior year," he said. "This year, my senior year, it was all right at first because I was excited, but as it came along it wore [on me] with the calls and text messaging. The last two days have been hectic - I had to turn my phone off last night for the first time. It was fun, though."

Mullins added that he's eager to join his future teammates and take the Tar Heels to the next level.

"Coming off that 5-6 season, the class coming in - I know pretty much all those guys - played with them in an all-star game," he said. "Coming in, we all talked about coming in and turning the program around."

Mullins is the second nationally televised announcement for UNC this recruiting season. Virginia linebacker Jarrell Miller announced his commitment to the Heels on ABC during the US Army All-American Game last month.
