Childers Working to Become a Heel

There is no doubt that North Carolina is where Tori Childers wants to eventually end up, but the 6-foot-6, 215-pound wideout has some steps to complete before he reaches that point.

"He does not qualify yet, he has some work to do with his grades," said Rock Hill (S.C.) head football coach Joe Montgomery. "They told him that they will look at his grades at the end of the year. If his grades show improvement, then they will place him at Hargrave [Military Academy] with the thought of him coming [to UNC] when he finishes at Hargrave."

According to Montgomery, Childers -- who told Inside Carolina on Signing Day earlier this month that he had verbally committed to the Tar Heels -- does not have an official UNC scholarship offer on the table yet. Therefore, he technically is not yet a member of the Tar Heels' 2007 commitment list.

If everything works out as planned, Childers would enroll at UNC in the spring of 2007 and the Tar Heels will add a raw, but talented, prospect to their roster.

"He's a tall kid that runs well," said Montgomery. "He goes after the ball as a wide receiver. He's a 6-foot-6 kid that just makes plays."

In an offense that didn't throw very much, Childers caught about ten touchdown passes during his senior season, while also excelling as a blocker, according to his coach.
