Richard won't stray far from home

Chris Richard has already fielded offers from Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Alabama, Florida State and Miami. There was interest from North Carolina, but no offer ever came his way.

But it's really no big deal to the 6-8, 225-pound rising senior that the Tar Heels haven't pulled the trigger yet. He's not interested in going that far from home, anyway.

"The furthest I think I'll go is the state of Alabama," Richard said. "I like Alabama and Auburn. North Carolina is a long way. Too far."

The UNC staff has gotten the message.

Richard, who is somewhat of a Chris Wilcox-clone, averaged 18 points, nine rebounds and four blocks per game last year while playing in the shadow of UConn-bound off-guard Rashad Anderson. He's powerful and gets off the ground quickly, but he still needs to develop his offensive game.

Richard plays for the Tallahassee Wildcats and will travel to New York next weekend for the Rumble in the Bronx. He is a bright kid and an honor student who is already eligible after receiving a 17 on the ACT.

Richard has ruled out Florida State and also said he won't be heading to Bloomington, Ind., since that's even further than Chapel Hill. So it looks like he'll remain in either the Sunshine State and attend Florida or Miami, or he may travel to Alabama and become a member of the Crimson Tide or sign with Auburn.
