Noel to Compete in Dunk Contest

North Carolina senior David Noel will compete in the nationally-televised College Slam Dunk Contest this Thursday in Indianapolis, a UNC official confirmed to IC.

Noel wowed the Tar Heel faithful with his high-flying performances for four years in Chapel Hill, but he was far more than a dunker. As a senior this past season, Noel earned second-team All-ACC honors in leading UNC to its surprising second-place finish in the ACC and top-ten national ranking.

"If people had seen and truly understood what he has meant to us behind the scenes, he may have made the first team," said Carolina coach Roy Williams.

The 6-6 Durham, N.C. native averaged 12.9 points (42% 3pt), 6.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists.

The 18th Annual Dell College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships take place Thursday in Indianapolis at 7 p.m. at the Hinkle Fieldhouse on the Butler University campus. It will be televised on tape delay Thursday at 9 p.m. on ESPN. It will also be re-aired several times on Friday and Saturday on ESPN and ESPN2.

Other college seniors scheduled to participate in the Dunk Contest are James White of Cincinnati, Hassan Adams of Arizona, Vincent Grier of Minnesota, Errol Knight of Gonzaga, Rodney Carney of Memphis, Maurice Ager of Michigan State, Elgrace Wilborn of Western Kentucky and Lawrence Wright of Bradley.

Those players participating in the three-point shootout are Illinois' Dee Brown, St. Peter's Keydran Clark, Marquette's Steve Novak, West Virginia's Kevin Pittsnogle, Notre Dame's Chris Quinn and Butler's Bruce Horan.
