Since the beginning of his recruitment Jonathan Smith has been hoping for a North Carolina scholarship offer. So when the Tar Heels extended an offer Sunday night, it only took a day for him to decide to commit.

"Coach [Tommy] Thigpen offered me [Sunday] and I committed today to both Coach Thigpen and Coach [Kenny] Browning," said Smith. "I'm going to call Coach Thigpen later on tonight so he can talk to my mom about my commitment."

Ultimately for Smith it came down to a continuously growing relationship with the North Carolina coaching staff and players.

"I've always been interested [in UNC]," said Smith. "When I went to their spring game I got the chance to meet their players and get to know them a little better. They seemed really interested in me and really wanted me to be there."

Smith, a 6-foot-3 195-pounder, is being recruited as an athlete/strong safety.

As a junior at Durham (N.C.) Hillside, Smith started at linebacker where he recorded 95 tackles, 15 tackles for a loss, and four sacks.

    During Scout.com's All-American Combine, Smith ran a 4.72-second 40-yard dash, 4.36-second 20-yard dash, and 7.37-second L-cone drill. He also vertically jumped 37 inches and broad jumped 8'11".

Smith considered interest from Nebraska, Wake Forest, Clemson and NC State, among others. Although he says his commitment is firm, he will take unofficial visits to Clemson and Wake Forest this spring. However, he doesn't plan to officially visit any other schools.
