After checking in at 6-foot-4 and 243 pounds, Chavis clocked relatively fast times in the 40-yard dash (4.83 seconds) and 20-yards shuttle (4.72 seconds). He also vertically jumped 29.3 inches and benched 185 pounds 23 times.
While the performance is bound to increase his recruiting stock, Chavis had already been receiving his share of college interest. In fact, the Tar Heel staff was already well aware of him and offered a scholarship long before this weekend's combine.
"[North] Carolina offered me a scholarship a while ago," said Chavis. "I'm also getting interest from State, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, and a couple of other schools."
A huge fan of the ACC, Chavis plans to choose a school from that conference and currently has North Carolina as his leader.
"I'm a Carolina Boy, so I love ACC ball," said Chavis. "I love [Coach John] Bunting, I love the staff. I love Carolina to death, it's a great program. They're definitely on the top of my list right now."
Chavis received his first in-depth look at UNC during the Tar Heels' spring game.
"They wined us and dined us, and we had a good time," said Chavis.
Besides his trip to Chapel Hill, Chavis hasn't made any unofficial visits, but is planning to camp at N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Georgia, and Tennessee, as well as UNC this summer.
As a junior at Fayetteville (N.C.) Sanford, Chavis starred at linebacker where he was named to the All-Conference team for the second straight year.
