Alvarez Receives Official Offer

If you pay close attention to which recruits have been offered a scholarship during the May evaluation period, it's obvious that the offensive line is a major target for North Carolina. William Alvarez is the latest lineman to be targeted by the Tar Heels.

"I just got the letter [Monday]," said Alvarez. "But they offered me when Coach [Tommy] Thigpen first came down here a few weeks ago. He came down and saw my film and said he was going to offer me."

Over the course of the last few weeks Alvarez has spoke a lot over the phone and through text messages with Thigpen and other members of the Tar Heels' coaching staff.

"I talk to Coach Thigpen all the time, I talk to Coach [Mark] Weber, Coach [John] Gutekunst, and the head coach [John Bunting]" said Alvarez. "My athletic director used to be the athletic director for Thigpen when he was at Potomac so they're real close. They really want me to visit there and they said I'll fall in love."

In addition to the coaching staff, Alvarez has also spoke with a member of North Carolina's 2007 commitment list.

"The quarterback that committed there, [Mike] Paulus, I talk to him a lot about North Carolina," said Alvarez. "He's just telling me that the campus is great and that we have a chance to turn Carolina around. He said that the recruiting class is going to be big this year and they have a good class coming in this year."

At 6-foot-5 and 310 pounds, Alvarez is being recruited for just about every position along the offensive line. The North Carolina coaching staff has talked to him about playing either tackle or guard.

Currently Alvarez is weighing the pros and cons of each of his 15 offering schools and definitely sees the positives of North Carolina.

"I like that's it's close to home and that it's a program on the rise," said Alvarez.

During his junior season as Woodbridge (Va.) Hylton, Alvarez earned Associated Press All-State honors.
