Wooten Where He Wanted to Be

Ample scholarship options in the middle part of May are rarely available for kickers. But even with offers from LSU and Clemson, Jay Wooten, from Laurinburg (N.C.) Scotland County, decided against waiting for more.

This morning, the 6-foot-3, 175 pound place-kicker and punter, who showed off a cannon for a leg in San Antonio last January, commited to North Carolina.

"I did everything this morning before I went to school," Wooten said. "I called Coach Bunting and I said 'Coach, I want to let you know that I'm going to be a Tar Heel'. He said he was real excited, he was in the car with Coach Pearman and they were giving high fives to each other."

Wooten decided that waiting would not change his mind, and he is happy to have the pressures of recruiting completed.

"I really thought about it and had come to peace with myself that if all the schools in the country had offered, North Carolina would be the place for me."

Recruiting done, Wooten now plans to take on the role of helping the North Carolina coaches with bringing in the rest of the class of 2007, including four-star teammate Travian Robertson.

"I plan on making calls to everybody they are recruiting, and now I need to call Travian."
