Defensive end is one of the highest priorities with the 2007 recruiting class, given the fact that North Carolina loses four players from this unit the next two years including Rackley and Brown [potential starters] after this season. The coaching staff plans to include between 2-3 defensive ends on February's signing list.

Targets With Offers
Miguel Chavis
6'4" 250 lbs. 4.80 Fayetteville (N.C.) Westover High School
UNC is in the leadership position for Chavis, who also holds a Wake Forest offer. This weekend, Chavis will camp at UNC where a verbal commitment isn't expected, but wouldn't be a surprise.

A combine warrior, Chavis is very athletic for his size. He could play many positions at the next level, but fits best as a rush end.

Carlos Dunlap

6'5" 225 lbs. 4.70 North Charleston (S.C.) Fort Dorchester High School
While Dunlap denies having any favorites, it is believed that an offer from Georgia would change that. Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, N.C. State, UNC, South Carolina, and Tennessee have all offered, but he doesn't plan to name a top five until the end of the summer. Before that, he figures to make a few more unofficial visits with UNC among the possible destinations.

A tall, quick, rangy defensive end, Dunlap is at his best rushing the quarterback. A very young prospect, Dunlap will head into his senior football season at only 16 years old.

Travian Robertson

6'4" 220 lbs. 4.60 Laurinburg (N.C.) Scotland High School
Published reports have stated that Robertson has narrowed his list of schools to Clemson and South Carolina, and will make a verbal commitment very soon. However, with the pipeline established with his high school -- including his best friend heading to UNC, his near pledge in the spring, and the amount of time until National Signing Day, it's hard to believe this one is completely over.

A high motor guy, Robertson is very quick for his size and has a frame to add much more weight.

During the last recruiting class, North Carolina stockpiled prospects for this position, including an elite recruit in Mullins. With that said, the coaching staff would like to ink at least one tackle and they already have a verbal commitment from sleeper William Brimfield. The staff would – without a doubt – still take Tydreke Powell and/or Marvin Austin.

William Brimfield
6'5" 290 lbs. 5.00
Neeses (S.C.) Hunter-Kinard-Tyler High School

A true sleeper, Brimfield was discovered by coach Danny Pearman. The combination of a coaching change and playing at a smaller school kept Brimfield off most recruiting lists.

After earning a scholarship offer with his performance during UNC's individual rising senior camp in June, Brimfield verbally committed to the Tar Heels. He cancelled future trips to any other schools showing the firmness of his pledge.

Brimfield moves very well for a prospect of his size. He's very coachable, and showed a non-stop motor during one-on-one pass rushing drills.

As a junior at Hunter-Kinard-Tyler High School, Brimfield was named to the all-region team after accumulating 111 tackles including 15 sacks, and three fumble recoveries.

Targets With Offers
Marvin Austin

6'2" 300 lbs. 4.90 Washington (D.C.) Ballou High School
The nation's number one prospect according to, Austin might be somewhat of a long shot for UNC. However, UNC did make the first cut and are among his final ten schools. The next cut, which will be announced August 8th, will be much harder to make.

Austin is the best combination of speed, strength, and agility you'll find at the high school level.

Tydreke Powell

6'4" 295 lbs. 5.00 Ahoskie (N.C.) Hertford County High School
Despite the constant flow of new scholarship offers, Powell has kept UNC high on his list. It will be a battle to the end for Powell's signature, fighting off some of the biggest-name programs in the country.

Powell has one of the most explosive first steps you'll see coming off the ball. He's been simply unstoppable during pass rush drills at camps and combines.
