Chavis, a 6-foot-4 250-pound jumbo athlete from Fayetteville [N.C.] Sanford, also had offers from Wake Forest and Virginia Tech, but knew all along UNC was the best fit.
"I had a great camp and a great talk with all the coaches," said Chavis. "It's close to home, the coaches are down to earth, and they have good ball players coming in. And I'm a Carolina boy playing at Carolina."
Also, Chavis' relationship with his primary recruiter helped make the decision easier.
"Me and Coach Weber have a great relationship," said Chavis. "We talk all the time. I called him first [before talking to Bunting]. He said ‘Miguel, I'm proud of you, you were my first recruit [at UNC] and now you're my first commit.'"
For North Carolina, Chavis is being recruited to play defensive end, a position he dreams to suit up playing in the NFL.
"My main goal is to go into the NFL and be a marquee player," said Chavis. "If that means I start my freshmen year or I redshirt, I don't care. I just want to play football and get better and learn the system."
Obviously firm in his decision, Chavis won't visit any other schools for the remainder of his recruitment.
"I am a Tar Heel," said Chavis. "I've always been a Tar Heel and I will be a Tar Heel during the ‘07-08 season."
As a junior at Fayetteville (N.C.) Sanford, Chavis starred at linebacker where he was named to the All-Conference team for the second straight year.
