Steinbacher to Direct UNC Athletic Marketing

CHAPEL HILL --- Rick Steinbacher, former Tar Heel football captain and director of operations, is the University of North Carolina's new associate athletic director for marketing and promotions, UNC director of athletics Dick Baddour announced today.

Steinbacher, 34, worked the last six years under head coaches Carl Torbush and John Bunting overseeing a wide variety of football-related administrative duties. They included day-to-day operations, travel, admissions and team personnel. He also has spent seven years (1994-99 and 2005) on the Tar Heel Sports Network broadcast team.

The Greenville, S.C., native played at Carolina from 1990-93 and started 30 games at inside linebacker. He captained the 1993 team that went 10-3, beat Southern California in the Disneyland Pigskin Classic and played Alabama in the Gator Bowl. Carolina went 32-14-1 in his four years. He earned third-team All-ACC honors as a senior.

Steinbacher spent five years in sales and marketing with Procter and Gamble, based in Charlotte. While at Procter and Gamble he worked with such companies as BI-LO, Winn-Dixie, Giant and Edwards. Steinbacher then joined Tar Heel Sports Marketing, where he was a Vice President for Account Development.

"Rick Steinbacher brings a unique blend of athletics, administration and business backgrounds to his new position," says Baddour. "He was a successful student-athlete, spent a number of years in corporate America and has been an outstanding member of the football staff for many years. Rick brings a strong combination of business skills, athletic administrative knowledge, leadership, creativity and decision-making ability to our marketing team."

Steinbacher replaces Norwood Teague, who became the director of athletics at Virginia Commonwealth University on July 1. Steinbacher's duties include but are not limited to overseeing all marketing and promotions for Carolina's 28-sport varsity program, coordinating sales efforts with Learfield Communications (UNC's multi-media rightsholder), directing corporate relations, season and single-game ticket marketing plans, concessions, and serving as administrative liaison with the UNC band and spirit squads.

Baddour also announced that Michael Beale has been named Assistant Director of Athletics for Marketing. Beale, an eight-year veteran of the UNC staff, has served as Director of Athletic Marketing, in which he coordinated promotional activities for football, men's basketball, baseball and golf. He will continue in that position and oversee UNC¹s live action video streaming, a new initiative that will place more than 50 Olympic sports events live on
