Barnes, a 6-foot-4 195-pound wide receiver, has been on the verge of making a verbal commitment since July, but has had difficulty choosing between North Carolina and South Carolina.
"He did go to South Carolina the one week and he went to [North] Carolina the other week," said Gieler.
Barnes unofficially visited UNC for the season opener against Rutgers, and was in attendance for South Carolina's home opener against Georgia.
Sources have confirmed to Inside Carolina that Barnes was also in Chapel Hill this past weekend for the game against Furman.
Barnes is the go-to receiver in Independence's pro-style passing offense. On the year, Barnes has caught four touchdown passes. Nationally ranked, the Patriots are 4-0 and own the nation's longest active winning streak at 96 games.
