Carolina women's basketball announces schedule

Carolina opens the women's basketball season Nov. 22.

The University of North Carolina women's basketball team will travel to Hawaii and will play nine regular-season conference games on television during the 2002-03 season, the schedule for which was announced on Monday. Following exhibition games on Nov. 3 and Nov. 6, the Tar Heels will open the season on Nov. 22 against Davidson in the teams' first meeting since the 1974-75 season, UNC's first on the varsity level.

Carolina opens Atlantic Coast Conference play on Jan. 2 against Georgia Tech in Atlanta then hosts NC State on Jan. 5 in a game that will air regionally as part of the ACC's television package, which includes Comcast Sports Net, Fox Sports Net South and Sunshine Network. Also televised by those networks will be games at Maryland (Jan. 27), against Georgia Tech (Feb. 2), at NC State (Feb. 7), at Wake Forest (Feb. 9), and at Duke (Feb. 20). Games against Duke (Jan. 20) and at Virginia (March 2) will be televised nationally by ESPN2. The Feb. 16 home game against Clemson will air on Fox Sports Net.

Over the Thanksgiving break from classes, Carolina will play in the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. Also in the tournament field are defending national champion Connecticut, NCAA runner-up Oklahoma, Denver, DePaul, Fordham, Gonzaga and host Hawaii. UNC last played in the tournament during the 1998-99 season, when it came away with a 2-1 mark.

UNC finished the 2001-02 season with a record of 26-9 and reached the NCAA Sweet 16 for the eighth time in the last 10 years. The Tar Heels, ranked No. 11 in last year's final coaches' poll and 16th in the final Associated Press poll, return 12 letterwinners--including four starters-- and have added two freshmen for the coming season. Coach Sylvia Hatchell heads into her 17th season at UNC with a record of 330-169. She is 602-249 in 27 seasons as a head coach.
