Heels Hire Butch Davis

As was first reported by Inside Carolina at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Butch Davis has signed on to become the next head coach at North Carolina.

Inside Carolina received reports from several sources that a contract has been agreed upon, though a formal announcement has not been scheduled and UNC has not given official confirmation.

Sources indicate that a formal announcement could be delayed until shortly after homecoming weekend, as there are conflicts being worked out regarding the timing of the announcement.

One UNC official was unavailable for comment Wednesday, while another, when contacted, declined comment to Inside Carolina. Since then, UNC officials have made public denials to local media.

One of North Carolina's top commitments, N.Y. quarterback Mike Paulus, told Inside Carolina late Wednesday evening that he received confirmation from two sources. "My coach let me know it was a done deal," said Paulus. "Our defensive coordinator is best friends with Butch Davis. ... I was able to call some of the [UNC] assistant coaches and they said ‘Yeah, it's official.'" (IC Report: Paulus 'Excited' About Davis)

The 54-year-old Davis returned the University of Miami to national prominence during his tenure. Taking over a program under heavy NCAA sanctions, Davis posted a 51-20 record with the Hurricanes from 1995-2000.

After an 11-1 record and a No. 2 national ranking in his sixth season at Miami, he chose to take the head job with the NFL's Cleveland Browns. Davis resigned during his fourth season in Cleveland, after compiling a 24-35 record.

* Late Wednesday afternoon, the Winston-Salem Journal made a similar report. "The University of North Carolina has reached an agreement with Butch Davis for him to become its next football coach," wrote the Journal's beat writer, Bill Cole. (link)

* Wednesday evening, ESPN reported that official word could come right after the weekend from the University. "North Carolina is hesitant to confirm the possible hiring of Davis because it wants the team's focus to be on Saturday's homecoming game ... an announcement of Davis' hiring, barring late complications, could come as early as Monday."
